What I Do

People often ask, “What do you do, Paul? Like, what kind of coaching do you specialize in?”

It’s hard to answer, because I’ve never really related to the word coaching, though I’ve studied and practiced it for a decade. Coaching sounds like I’m trying to make someone perform better at something, which I'm not.

I see myself more as a guide. I help people envision their lives as a path, then I help them walk it. Ultimately, I help people listen to their own inner guidance.

There’s an old Turkish story about a man who goes to a saint for a blessing.

“What do you need?” the saint asks.

“My family could use a bushel of wheat,” says the man.

“We don’t deal in wheat here,” replies the saint. “Just breath.”

But the man insists, so the saint gives him what little wheat he has and the man leaves.

On his way home, the man realizes his mistake. “Once my family eats this wheat,” he thinks, “they’ll just want more. But to breathe as the saint does, full of joy and confidence, that’s truly something worth learning.” So he turns around and vows to spend the rest of his life studying with the saint.

In my own journey, I’ve chased many things I thought I needed: fame, recognition, superiority. I was lucky to find people who showed me that happiness doesn’t come from any of these. I was lucky to find people who had nothing to offer me but breath.

Now I’ve worked with thousands of people around the world on everything from relationships to money to creativity. But all these topics come down to one: learning to trust the voice that is great within you. That’s how I help, and what I do best.

If you’re ready to listen to your inner voice, to your own breath, let's talk.
